Debunking the Myths About Liquid Natural Gas

Liquid Natural Gas, or as it is also called, LNG, is a new and widely misunderstood fuel. LNG is the same fuel that is used to heat homes and fuel stoves and ovens. In your home, the product comes through the pipeline as a gas. Natural gas does not become a liquid until it is cooled to a chilly minus 260 Fahrenheit. It is liquefied to make large quantities of it easier to store and transport. Here we will give you the facts about Liquid Natural Gas.

Is LNG Safe?

Liquid Natural Gas is one of the safest fossil fuels. People often think that natural gas is dangerous and can explode, having heard and seen news stories of homes exploding from a natural gas leak. Here are the facts.

Liquid Natural Gas is NOT flammable in its liquid state. You can literally put out a cigarette in a cup full of LNG! LNG must first be vaporized in order for it to burn. Even then it is a very slow burning and difficult fuel to ignite. It has a very narrow range of volatility of between 5% – 15% saturation.  Any more or any less and it will not burn! The vapor requires a high temperature ignition source and most importantly it must be in a contained environment. This explains the house stories with the gas leak. So out in the open, a natural gas leak is really not a problem at all. The gas you have in your car is actually a much more dangerous fuel.

There are other characteristics that make LNG such a great alternative fuel. LNG is non-toxic and non-corrosive. Believe it or not, you can pour LNG into a beaker of water, wait just a minute for it to vaporize off and the water is completely safe to drink. LNG floats on water and will not mix with it, shortly evaporating, making an LNG spill a non-event. The same applies with a spill on the ground. LNG simply vaporizes into the atmosphere, and since it is lighter than air it cannot pool in low-lying areas unlike other hydrocarbon gases like propane and butane.

Clean burning LNG

In today’s business environment where every company is looking for ways to be “green”, LNG is a great solution, being one of the cleanest burning fossil fuels. Safe to work around, no cleanup required after a spill, less harmful to the environment and inexpensive, LNG is one of the best choices as an alternative fuel.
